Announces FDA and USDA Approvals for New Post-Chill Poultry Application
(NORTH LITTLE ROCK, AR – NOVEMBER 29, 2007) Safe Foods Corporation announced today that the FDA and the USDA have approved the company’s patented Cecure® food safety technology for a new post-chill application to raw poultry. The FDA and USDA approved Cecure for a poultry pre-chill application in 2004. Cecure’s active ingredient, cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), is the active ingredient used in many mouth rinses and throat lozenges and has been safely consumed in a number of over-the-counter oral hygiene products for more than 55 years.
“Cecure is already being used by multiple leading poultry processors to treat millions of chickens and ducks daily in the U.S.,” according to Curtis Coleman, Safe Foods’ President and CEO. “This latest approval is not only for a post-chill point of application, but for an entirely new method of applying Cecure to poultry carcasses,” Coleman said. “Cecure’s extraordinary efficacy is well-documented and accepted, but this new method and point of application enables Cecure to consistently deliver a post-chill Salmonella positives rate of 2% or less and dramatically reduce spoilage organisms at the same time.”
Coleman said that the new Cecure application system that is used to apply Cecure has a “significantly lower cost,” is considerably simpler and is easier to install, operate and maintain than the original application system. Coleman also said that the FSIS has confirmed in writing that the new approval would not invoke any labeling requirements for Cecure-treated poultry products.
“This is a great food safety solution for poultry processors,” said Dr. Peggy Cook, Chief Scientific Officer for Safe Foods. “This is the most effective antimicrobial on the market, and it is available at a phenomenally competitive price. On top of that, it uses no acids, raises no worker safety or environmental concerns and uses less than 1,000 gallons of water per day to treat 200,000 or more birds.”
The company announced in July of this year that Health Canada had approved the use of Cecure to control bacteria on poultry processed in Canada. The company has also been granted approvals and has approvals pending in numerous other countries around the world, according to Coleman. “We are experiencing an enormous pull from food processors all over the world.” he said. The company expects Cecure to also be approved for treating beef products in early 2008.
The first of many patents for the use of CPC to control food-borne pathogens was granted in 1994 to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), and in June 1999, Safe Foods acquired the exclusive worldwide rights to the patents from the University of Arkansas. Cecure is the company’s brand name for its CPC-based formulation. In multiple U.S. and international studies, Cecure has been proven to be dramatically effective in killing Listeria, E. coli, Salmonella and Campylobacter, food-borne pathogens that can cause serious and sometimes life-threatening illnesses. “Cecure can be used to safely control pathogens on all foods,” Coleman said, “and we are aggressively moving forward with food processors and regulators in multiple countries to make that possible.” About Safe Foods
