Dr. Peggy Cook Appointed by U. S. D. A. Secretary Johanns to National Advisory Committee

Dr. Peggy Cook, Chief Scientific Officer for Safe Foods Corporation, has been appointed by U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns to the National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods (NACMCF). Dr. Cook directs the Research and Development division of Safe Foods Corporation and is a member of the American Society of Microbiologists, Institute of Food Technology, Association of Official Analytical Chemists, International Association of Food Protection and American Association for Laboratory Accreditation.

NACMCF was established in 1988 to provide scientific advice on public health issues relative to the safety and wholesomeness of the U. S. food supply.

These new appointees are scientific experts that represent disciplines related to health and food safety issues. The committee also assists in the development of microbiological criteria and reviews and evaluates epidemiological and risk assessment data as well as methodologies for assessing microbiological hazards.

The committee serves the U.S. Departments of Agriculture, Health and Human Services, Commerce and Defense. The committee meets two to three times annually and has subcommittees that meet as often as necessary.

The Secretary of Agriculture appoints committee members after consulting with the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Appointees represent government, industry, academia and consumers. Committee members serve a two-year term.
