Dr.
Peggy Cook, Chief Scientific Officer for Safe Foods Corporation, has
been appointed by U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns to the
National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods (NACMCF).
Dr.
Cook directs the Research and Development division of Safe Foods
Corporation and
is a member of the American Society of Microbiologists, Institute of
Food Technology, Association of Official Analytical Chemists,
International Association of Food Protection and American
Association for Laboratory Accreditation.
NACMCF was
established in 1988 to provide scientific advice on public health
issues relative to the safety and wholesomeness of the U. S. food
supply.
These new appointees are scientific experts that represent
disciplines related to health and food safety issues. The committee
also assists in the development of microbiological criteria and
reviews and evaluates epidemiological and risk assessment data as
well as methodologies for assessing microbiological hazards.
The committee serves the U.S. Departments of Agriculture, Health and
Human Services, Commerce and Defense. The committee meets two to
three times annually and has subcommittees that meet as often as
necessary.
The Secretary of Agriculture appoints committee members after
consulting with the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Appointees represent government, industry, academia and consumers.
Committee members serve a two-year term.
